I’m the Favorite Child

im-the-favorite.pngWhen I was a little girl, I loved to get cards from my Grandma Treece. I kept almost every one of them and can look back on the words she wrote, today. She would always sign my cards, “To My Number One Granddaughter!’ That made me feel like I was her favorite. But, if you talk to my sister or my cousins, they all felt the same way. They were Grandma’s favorite. See I was the first granddaughter born, so she could get away with writing that in my card, but to me, it made me feel super special. She had a way of making all of us feel like we were her favorite and it was different for each of us.

A good parent or grandparent can somehow make every child feel like they are the only one, even though they really do love all their children and grandchildren. I feel that way with God, too. Sometimes I feel like I’m His favorite child. When I’m in a dispute with a brother or sister in Christ, I think He is certainly going to take my side. Yet, He has proven to me time and again that I am wrong even thinking that. He doesn’t take sides when it comes to His children. He takes the side of His children against one enemy, Satan, not each other. Let me tell you a true story.

My late husband, David, had been married before we met. They had been divorced for some time and she had already remarried. After we began to date, his first wife would do things to instigate strife and trouble. She didn’t want him, but she didn’t want anyone else to be with him, either. She was also a pastor’s daughter and had fallen away from her relationship with God. She was living a life of sin and was a very unhappy person, even though she tried to portray something completely different. I found myself literally hating her and wishing she would just be removed from the planet. I thought that I was justified because of all the lies she was telling against us and the grief that she was causing.

The Word tells us to bless those who curse us and pray for those who mistreat us (Luke 6:28), so, that’s what I began to do. However, my prayer was more because I thought that if I prayed for her, God would take care of her and punish her for everything that she was doing against us. I didn’t really want her to be blessed. No way!  I just knew that God loved me more. Why wouldn’t He “take our side”? I had been a “good girl”. I had lived a godly life and devoted my life to ministry. Look at her! She was a mess and she was picking on me, God’s favorite daughter. He would certainly take care of her. While that sounds juvenile, I’m certain you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Yet, something completely different happened. As I sat in church one Sunday morning, my dad was preaching about the love of God for the lost. I sat there in my seat listening to his message and this overwhelming sense of love for her washed over me. It took me by surprise and all I could do was see her face and feel such compassion and desire for her to come back to God. The words to a song by Donny McGuire started to go through my head, “He loves me so much, He can’t keep His eyes off me. You should see the way that He smiles at me when they say, I look like Him. His arms are so big, that where I am that’s where He’ll be. He loves me so much. He can’t keep His eyes off me.” There is another line in the song that says, “When I tried to make my bed in Hell, He just ripped the place apart. Who else is dying to love like that, I can’t break my Father’s heart.” As I sat in my chair, tears began to flow down my face as I heard the Holy Spirit say to me, “You are not my favorite daughter. I love you more than you can imagine, but she is my daughter, too. I love her as I love you.”

See, as I was being so self-righteous because of the “works” I was doing for the Lord, I was as much a mess as she was. As I was thinking that I had it all together because I was living a life of purity (in my own mind), I was hating her, which according to the Word made me a murderer. We quantify sin and judge one another by what we think is bad, when the Bible tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And we are not in right standing with Him because of anything that we do, it is all about what Jesus did. No matter how hard we try to live for God, we all mess up. Yet, He keeps on loving us.

The Bible also tells us that, “. . . The Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child” (Hebrews 12:6). Well, my loving Father disciplined me that day. I didn’t feel that He loved me any less because of the words He said to me. I just knew that every person walking this planet is “His favorite child”, including me. So much so that He gave his own life for me and for every person that would ever live. I was able to share that with this woman who I had hated. I was able to tell her how much Jesus loved her and what He had shared with me and how she was His favorite and that He missed her. Boy did that mess up the devils plans to destroy us both. It also changed my thinking for the better. Although I must remind myself of this from time to time, it made a lasting impact on my life and hope that it will yours.

If you have a relationship with God, a real relationship, you will feel like you are His favorite. Like any good Father, he has a way of making us all feel that way which is amazing when He has billions of children. Yet, we all must know that when we have a conflict with someone, He is not going to just take our side because we “are His favorite” or because we are “doing good”. If we would just sit down and pray for that person that has hurt us or may still be hurting us, we would make the Father’s heart happy. If we think about that person that is hurting us as being His “Number One” and realize the depth of love that He poured out for them, our perspective is completely changed. We stop thinking about what they are doing to hurt us, and we start realizing that we are not really fighting against them. We are all fighting another enemy and that is the one who hates God. Satan knows how much God loves each of His children and he and his demons are constantly sowing seeds of discord to keep us separated from each other. When we can truly see that our enemy is not one another, we will understand why prayer is our best weapon when we are in a situation that we don’t understand. Although the attack comes from people, we must understand the underlying instigator and trust the heart of our Father for His children that He wants us all to love one another and work together.

I love how the New Living Translation reads 2 Corinthians 10:4:

“We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.”

Everyone thought that when the Messiah came, He was going to literally destroy with weapons, all their enemy’s. The Jews knew they were “God’s favorite” and it was only a matter of time before He showed up and showed their enemies who was boss. Yet, Jesus came to destroy the works of the enemy satan, not people. The weapons He used were love and self-sacrifice and in quiet meekness, He fought and won the most amazing battle ever fought. He let His enemies do what they were going to do, and little did they know, but they were actually bringing to pass the salvation of all mankind and that day, Jesus defeated death, hell and the grave and gave every living person the ability to be God’s Favorite Child.

If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s that I don’t want to help the enemy instigate strife among God’s children. As a parent, it grieves me when my children don’t get along. I can’t even fathom what the heart of the Father God must endure each day as His children hurt one another and think that they are justified. I believe it literally is as simple as going before God and repenting for what we have done and praying for one another. If we can truly love like Jesus, overlooking the sins of others and seeing the heart of the child that God loves, and that Jesus gave His life for, we will make His heart happy and we will overcome the work of Satan.

Today, I ask you to examine your heart. Have you thought you are God’s favorite? Have you let the enemy use that against you to make you think that you are justified in your actions toward someone else? Do you think that there are “sides” in the Kingdom of God and your Father is certainly going to take “your side”? Then you are probably playing into the hands of the enemy whose very job is to divide the household of God. Don’t let him do that. Love one another, do good to one another and pray for one another. It really is that simple. Repent and begin to pray for those who you are at odds with and let the loving Father work among His children in the way that only He can. Then, you release it to Him and love them.

If you are reading this and you don’t know what it means to be a “child of God” then I want to introduce you to your Father. You are not an orphan. You have a Father waiting with open arms to accept you and love you as His Favorite Child. You don’t have to be alone anymore or feel like no one loves you. That feeling that you are having in your chest as you read this, that is God pulling at your heart to tell you that He loves you and He is there for you and has always been there waiting for you to just accept Him. Just because you can’t see Him, I know that you are aware of His presence. Just begin to talk to Him and tell Him that you want Him to come into your life. Ask Him to forgive you of your sin and He will lift that heavy weight you have been carrying off you! You will continue to feel His presence and you can talk to Him all the time. He loves you. If you prayed that prayer and asked Jesus into your heart, please go to my contact page and send me an email to let me know. I would love to help you take the next steps and make sure that you can meet others of God’s favorite children who can help you in your walk with God.

Thank you for reading today and I pray that it helped you and that it will help bring peace into the Body of Christ. Blessings to you and yours!
